Chapter Thirteen

Jordan tried his best to keep up with Garrett, who kept getting farther ahead. Garrett stopped and waited for him as they slowly continued on their path, following the group deeper into the woods. Shortly after entering the trees, a giant branch the size of a walking stick was leaning up against a tree. Jordan reached out and grabbed it. He leaned his weight against the stable branch, making it easier to follow.

He tried his best to keep up with Garrett, who kept getting farther ahead.

Garrett stopped and waited for him as they slowly continued on their path, following the group deeper into the woods.

The group moved farther through the woods. After what seemed like an eternity to Jordan, they finally made it to the mouth of the cave.

Now they knew something was going on. Jordan didn't relish returning to the cave, but he wouldn't stop and look this time. He would stay right next to Garrett and not leave his side.

The musty, damp smell of the cave hit Jordan as they passed into the mouth, as did the mental coldness he felt the last time they were there. They watched the lights disappear along the paths from a safe distance. Garrett put his finger to his lips and motioned for them to take a different path than the party they were following.

Jordan continued to follow Garrett as he led Jordan farther into the caves. The location was beginning to look familiar. They were heading in the direction of the main cavern. The one with the altar they were just at earlier in the day.

Why would they come here so late at night, and where was the sheriff? Was he involved? Is that why he was determined to get them away from the caves?

Garrett stopped them at a small opening that looked down into the cavern below. He motioned for Jordan to get on his hands and knees and follow him closer to the opening so they could watch what was going on far below.

Jordan carefully leaned his staff against the cavern wall and gently eased himself down onto his hands and knees. He crawled slowly over to Garrett, who was already peeping into the cavern.

Jordan raised his head and looked out.

Several figures stood in black robes in a circle around the altar. Dark music was playing from somewhere unseen. The sound of drums filled the cavern with a tribal beat.

“Infernalage!” the group chanted in unison. “Infernalage. Infernalage! Infernalage!”

In the center of the circle, two figures with more elaborate black robes lowered their hoods, revealing Gwydion and his wife. They raised their hands into the air, chanting, "Infernalage," in tune with the drums.

Eventually, Gwydion and Samantha brought their hands down, and the chanting stopped.

Each person in the circle brought down the hood of their robes. Jessica Tanner, Amy and Kevin Dillinger, Dr. Pike, and the sheriff stood in the circle.

So the sheriff was involved. Jordan glanced at Garrett. Whispering as quietly as possible, he said, "So, if the sheriff is involved, we have no legal protection.
